The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that applications have opened in the UK and US for their Breakthrough talent scheme.

The initiative, previously known as Breakthrough Brits, has been running in the UK since 2013 and in the US and India since the global expansion last year.

The scheme was created to showcase and support the next generation of creative talent in film, games and television.

More than 160 newcomers have participated, including Ali Tocher (Surgeon Simulator 2), Arnaldo Licea (The Last of Us Part II), Chella Ramanan (Before I Forget), Claire Bromley (Sackboy: A Big Adventure), Fernando Reyes Medina (Halo Infinite) and Mary Kenney (Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

Netflix will again support Bafta Breakthrough, which uses a cross-industry jury of leading professionals to identify new talent.

The successful Breakthrough applicants will receive one-to-one mentoring and career guidance, Bafta said, as well as full voting membership of Bafta.

Amanda Berry, chief executive of Bafta, said: “Breakthrough is a brilliant initiative that has been championing emerging talent for eight years in the UK, with a wonderful network of talented individuals growing each year.
