The Samford women’s basketball team is coming down to the home stretch of the season with a 20-6 record, ranked 2nd in the Ohio Valley Conference, just a half-game behind Southeast Missouri State.
This past weekend, Samford routed Eastern Kentucky in a 71-48 win, which clinched a home spot in the first round of the OVC tournament, starting March 4.
Saturday also marked a celebration of the seniors’ contribution to the team. The Bulldogs honored Taryn Towns, Kenzie Spruiell and Alex Munday.
“Senior day is bittersweet, because for our three seniors, it’s the finality,” Head Coach Mike Morris said. “But they have all had major contributions and huge achievements, especially since they are the most winning class in the history of the program.”
This is also a difficult goodbye time for the seniors.
“It is an honor to be a part of something like this and a team like this,” Spruiell said. “This entire team is amazing.”
Each senior has added her own contributions to the team, specifically Munday, who was named Samford’s all-time leading scorer. Towns has averaged 9.3 points this season. Spruiell has come off the bench, adding a valuable role in shooting.
The Bulldogs have fought through adversity, injury and a major lack of fan support, continuing to prevail in the OVC.
“There is still a long way for the team to go before it is ready for the conference playoffs,” Morris said. “But if we continue to play as well as we have been, then it will be a good competition.
“We have to improve in order to accomplish what we want to.”
Morris said his team is unique because they have learned to rely on themselves for support. Fan support has never been the greatest at Samford women’s basketball games.
The team even has its own slogan: “It’s about us.”
“It’s about us and the game we play,” Morris said. “Obviously it isn’t about the fans. We gain confidence in us and we do what we need to do.”
The Bulldogs ended their home schedule this passed weekend. The team will go on the road for the next four games, which includes games against Tennessee Tech, Murray State, Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Illinois.
The Bulldogs will open the OVC tournament at home against an opponent to be announced on Tuesday, March 4.
