Issue date: 2/20/08 Section: Sports
The Samford Baseball team was picked fifth out of 10 teams in the OVC preseason poll on Monday. The picks were made by each head coach in the conference.
The Bulldog’s rival Jacksonville State was picked first with 76 points; Samford received 54 points. Following the Gamecocks was Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, and Southeast Missouri.
"I think the biggest thing this year is our athleticism,” Head Coach Casey Dunn said at the team’s media day press conference on Monday. “This is by far the most athletic team we have put on the field.”
Following the Bulldogs in the poll were Eastern Illinois, Murray State and Tennessee Tech. Morehead State and UT Martin rounded out the poll.
Samford junior shortstop Michael Marseco was the lone Bulldog to be named to the preseason all-conference team. Marseco led Samford with a .350 batting average last season.
The Bulldogs will open up the season this weekend with a three-game series at Kennesaw State.
