I fear that the culture (or lack thereof) of Samford students is held down not only by the administration but also by students' complacency. What will it take to change the culture of the student body here?
I do not think the student culture can develop unless the administration takes a step back and gives students the room to advance and form their own culture. The students need responsibility.
I would like to think that Samford students are intelligent enough to develop certain ideas and programs. The university must first give them the chance and grant them some basic level of trust.
Why is tradition feared? Is it because tradition undermines current authority and transcends logic? Ridiculous. Tradition calls us to a place of higher authority. And yes, in a sense, this higher authority would undermine current authority and keep it in check.
Tradition would also greatly increase the quality of life-and the lifelong connectedness-of the student body.
As the semester draws to a close, work toward creating tradition at this place we all love.
