Halloween provides the perfect opportunity to sit back and watch horror films with your friends, whether they are friends who "laugh in the face of danger" or the friends who jump even with the slightest noises. But that is the whole fun of it.
Scary horror films might not have the best acting, directing or purpose, but they do have what many other movies do not have: the fun-factor. I mean, come on, who doesn't enjoy watching their best friend scream or make rather disturbing noises when Jason or Freddy pops out of nowhere?
So going into my relatively small horror film vault, I share the ten best movies to watch on Halloween. Enjoy.
"The Shining"
No doubt on everyone's "Top 10" list, "The Shining," for lack of a better word, shines. Watching Jack Nicholson's character Jack Torrance melt down into a psychopathic rage is truly frightening. There are no cheap little scares in this film, but there are real, frightening scares that are beyond description. I cannot recommend "The Shining" enough. It is one of, if not the best, horror films of all time.
"The Exorcist"
While "The Shining" might focus on the psychological side of the horror genre, "The Exorcist" is all about Satan and pure evil incarnated. The film is about a young girl possessed with demons, it is evil at its penultimate level. If you are practice demon exorcising or even hunting, this film should be up your alley. Also, keep your ears open for the main theme song of the movie. It was on the Billboard Top 10 when the film released.
"Halloween"
The original, old-school slasher flick that started it all and left the genre wide-open for a barrage of imitators and even recently a remake of sorts by Rob Zombie (see my full review in the Sept. 12 issue). In this "Halloween," a hulking psychopath by the name of Michael Myers stalks and murders a teenager (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. This film was directed by the legendary John Carpenter, a master of the horror genre.
