The Samford women's golf team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin last Friday to compete in the Badger Invitational, the team's first tournament of the season. The team shared the course with seven of the top twelve women's golf teams in the nation.
Due to a steady rain that began early Monday morning, the last round of play was cancelled with only two holes remaining, leaving the Bulldogs in 11th place after 36 holes. Oklahoma came away with the win with a total of 594 team strokes.
"The tournament was a really good learning experience for the girls," Head Coach Woodie Eubanks said. "They played against big competition. We didn't play like we wanted to, but I saw great character from the girls. They didn't give up; they fought hard for Samford."
The Bulldogs shot 332 in round one and 327 in round two; sophomore Sara Hunt led the team with a two round low score for the Bulldogs, shooting 162 (80-82). Sophomore Katelyn Stanier and junior Maria Troche followed closely behind shooting 164 (+18).
Junior Kellie O'Connell lit up the dreary course with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 154-yard, 12th hole in the second round.
"It was great to ace the last hole of the day, but it was somewhat bittersweet because none of us played the way we wanted to," O'Connell said.
Despite the outcome of the tournament, players say they have plenty of reasons to look forward to the season ahead. The women's team placed third in the OVC championships last year, with Katelyn Stanier winning the individual title as a freshman. The team hopes to build on those accomplishments this year.
Stanier and four other members of last year's skilled team return this year. Sara Hunt, a transfer from Birmingham Southern, is a promising addition to the team. While playing for Birmingham Southern, Hunt won the Lady Pirate Invitational and received Big South Conference Golfer of the Week honors. She transferred to Samford after Birmingham Southern moved back to Division II.
