The men's basketball team returned to Birmingham a few days earlier than they had hoped after a 55-43 loss to The Citadel on Friday. With their third loss to The Citadel this season, the Bulldogs concluded the season 11-20, 5-13 in the SoCon. "The final record of our team this season is no reflection on the character of our team," head coach Jimmy Tillette told samfordsports.
The women's basketball team was within single digits of "the big dance." In Monday's SoCon tournament championship, the Bulldogs let go of an 11-point lead to fall to Chattanooga, 72-67. With the loss, the team lost their chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Samford University softball team heads into grueling SoCon play this weekend hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers. They went 2-3 this weekend at the Wilson/Demarini Invitational in Tempe, Az., hosted by ninth-ranked Arizona State. The Dogs split two thrillers on the first day of the tournament, dropping an eight-inning decision 1-0 to Creighton before taking a 10-7 win over Northern Iowa in 10 innings.
Those of you who read this very humble column each week may have noticed that I try very hard to avoid issues dealing with Samford. I deal with sports, and I honestly believe that our staff from the president to the athletic director to the administration, coaches and support staff is one of, if not the best, of its kind in the country.
The 2010 golf season is underway, and head coach Woody Eubanks said he is excited to see what both the men's and women's teams are going to accomplish this spring. The expectations are varied for two squads that are in entirely different places. On both sides of the equation, the conference slate will be tough for both teams.
The women's club lacrosse team played its first official games as members of the Southeastern Women's Lacrosse League in a doubleheader at Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 27. Samford, which currently holds associate membership in the SWLL, first played fellow associate member Kennesaw State, and then played veterans and full members, Alabama.
