Disability Awareness Week begins March 29, giving students the opportunity to take a look at the accessibility restrictions of Samford's campus.

With a combination of hilly terrain, abundant staircases and buildings that outdate the Americans With Disabilities Act requirements, Samford's campus poses restrictions to individuals with disabilities.

Last Friday the School of Arts took part in a six-hour fast from electronic communication. This "social experiment" was in response to queries about the amount of personal conversation and its role in the School of Arts and Samford University. The exercise included School of Arts students, faculty and staff who all refrained from email, facebook, texting and twitter from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Friday, March 5.

Samford's drinking game

What we can't see can't hurt us. This phrase seems to be at the heart of Samford's drinking policy, and it unfortunately falls short.

I personally have no problem with drinking, as long as it's done responsibly and the drinker is of legal age. I believe there are an awful lot of other sins and vices that can arise as consequences of drinking, but the act of drinking in and of itself is no different than eating a ham sandwich.

The unfortunate state of Alabama seems to have fallen through the cracks in so many areas. Paralyzed by inadequate public services, corrupt elected officials, irrelevant laws from an outdated constitution, lingering racial tensions, and stinging poverty, the state cannot be blamed for its perpetual problems.

Improving campus accessibility

Today's paper features a news article examining the issues faced by handicapped students on campus. Unless you have physical disabilities yourself, you probably don't think twice about the many stairs you climb and the hills you hike up every day. Yet many buildings on campus remain inaccessible to handicapped students, and the paths paved for individuals with disabilities often force them to zig-zag across campus on paths they would not normally take.
The expectations are varied for two squads that are in entirely different places. On both sides of the equation, the conference slate will be tough for both teams.
