Zombie fans have hit the jackpot with the new trailer for Army of the Dead.
Dave Bautista stars as Scott Ward, a former soldier turned fry cook who is brought out of retirement for one last job – a heist on a Las Vegas Casino. It just happens to be taking place during a zombie apocalypse.
Directed by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead looks to be going big on the action.
But if you were expecting something similar to Dawn of the Dead, you’ll be sorely mistaken.
The slow, shambling zombies of previous movies have been given a Vegas makeover. They’re more glitzy, more glamorous and more deadly than ever.

And they’re not as mindless as you might think.
Could we see a zombie sex scene?
Army of the Dead certainly pushes boundaries, and it might even show some zombies getting it on.
One scene in particular teases a zombie romance, of sorts.
Spotted about halfway through the trailer, a zombie showgirl and her mate are shown in a passionate clinch, about to kiss. Not exactly the kind of behaviour we’ve come to expect of the walking dead.
These undead monsters are more agile, more aware and apparently capable of feeling – emotions such as love or passion usually elude the shambling, monosyllabic undead.
But this isn’t your usual zombie movie.
There’s even a zombie tiger
Army of the Dead is coming to Netflix
Zombification tends to be confined to the human populace in most zombie flicks.
But that’s not the case here.
Army of the Dead introduces Zack Snyder’s crowning glory – a zombie tiger striding into battle, presumably after escaping from a Las Vegas show during the initial zombie outbreak.
It’s visually striking, and incredibly grim. And it will likely prove to be more than a challenge for Bautista and his band of bank robbing zombie survivors.
If human zombies are strong, fast and organised, what’s a zombie tiger going to be like?
More importantly, how much firepower are they going to need to take it down?
Army of the Dead’s zombies are a bit different
Most zombie films feature hordes of slow, shambling undead – the classic zombies we’ve seen in everything from Night of the Living Dead to Shaun of the Dead.
They’re mindless, emotionless and can usually be outrun with ease.
But their relentless shambling always wins out in the end.

Army of the Dead goes a very different route – these zombies are fast-moving. But that’s not all. They’re far more than meets the eye.
“They’re not what you think they are,” says one of the survivors. “They’re smarter, they’re faster, they’re organised.”
You can see it in the trailer – there are zombie lookouts guarding zombie outposts, and not just shuffling about with no sense of purpose. In fact, it looks as though Army of the Dead’s undead horrors have banded together much like most survivors.
Army of the Dead’s zombies have a queen
Not quite the shambling mass of zombies we’re used to, is it?
Instead, Army of the Dead introduces a zombie showgirl – quite a shocking sight, even for Vegas. But she’s more than that. She might just be the zombies’ leader.
Many fans are already referring to her as the ‘Zombie Queen’ as she appears to be taking charge throughout the trailer.
As the camera takes us deep into zombie headquarters, acolytes fall at her feet, bowing in honour as our zombie showgirl enters the room.
This is a marked difference compared to other zombie flicks, which usually depict the monsters as disorganised shambling masses. But in Army of the Dead, they’re far deadlier than they seem. And they’ve built themselves a kind of society.
Army of the Dead’s zombies are faster, better, stronger
Don’t expect to outrun them – Army of the Dead’s zombies are far more agile than usual.
Throughout the trailer we’re shown the zombies acting more like people then mindless undead creatures. There’s less shambling, for one thing. But it’s more complex than that.
At one point in the trailer, Bautista ends up in a knife fight with a zombie.
Usually, that could only go one way – with the zombie impaled and Bautista making his escape. But this time, the zombie ducks and dives out of his way, avoiding his slashes with agility and almost grace.
There’s even one zombie seen riding into battle atop a zombified horse – more reminiscent of Lord of the Rings than a zombie movie.
They’re fast, they’re organised, and they clearly mean business.
And it begs the question – if they’re this strong, how do our survivors stand a chance against an entire city of them?
Army of the Dead is available to stream on Netflix from May 21
