A third film in the Ace Ventura franchise has been revealed to be in the works.

The production company behind the films which star Jim Carrey in the iconic eponymous role of the Pet Detective has made some revelations about what fans have to look forward to.

Morgan Creek Entertainment, the production company behind Ace Ventura, told distribution company Park Circus in a spotlight piece: "We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise – it's noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamouring for a 3rd instalment… "

They added that audiences have enjoyed seeing classic characters return with new stories during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is when they delivered the real corker for what fans of the Jim Carrey character can expect.

"Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers," the team notes.

There was no confirmation on whether Jim would return for a sequel.

Celebrity Insider previously suggested he is hoped to return but to pass the baton on to a new character, possibly his own child.

The first film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was released back in 1994 and helped catapult Carrey to stardom and also starred Courtney Cox and Sean Young.

Upon its release, the film grossed $107 million worldwide at the box office.

Following this, a sequel entitled Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was released in 1995 and made an even bigger profit at $212 million.

Despite both films being successes at the box office, a third film featuring the character never materialised.
