Arsenal have made an inquiry for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez during their ambitious summer in the transfer market.

Mikel Arteta is on the verge of spending £50 million on Brighton centre-back Ben White and has looked at Martínez among a number of forwards in a position he wants to strengthen before the window closes on Aug 31.

Inter are determined to keep the 23-year-old Argentina striker as they attempt to defend the Italian title next season, and would prefer him to extend his contract which has two years left to run at San Siro.

But the interest shows that Arsenal’s technical director, Edu, is aiming high in the market to get the club closer to a top four Premier League finish after missing out on European football altogether last season. Italy midfielder Manuel Locatelli was also a summer target, his club Sassuolo have confirmed.

They have also been attempting to sign a goalkeeper and have had offers rejected for Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale. Their next move could be impacted by a deal falling through for Alex Runarsson to join Altay in Turkey.

The two clubs could not agree terms for the Iceland international, who made starts in the Europa League and EFL Cup last season.

Bettinelli joins Chelsea

Marcus Bettinelli has agreed a two-year deal to join Chelsea as a free agent.

The 29-year-old, who was on loan at Middlesbrough last season from Fulham, will be behind Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order of goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge.

Bettinelli was the subject of interest from other Premier League clubs after his contract at Craven Cottage expired this summer, making him available as a homegrown back-up available without a fee.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are set to loan out Dutch full-back Ian Maatsen, 19, to Coventry City on a season-long loan.

Napoli ready to consider Koulibaly’s departure

Napoli are looking at centre-back targets as Kalidou Koulibaly could finally leave this summer.

The 30-year-old had an asking price of £70m a year ago but will be available for around half that amount as he approaches the final two years of his contract at Stadio San Paolo.

Completing a move to the Premier League will not be straightforward as Liverpool and Arsenal have both signed centre-backs this season and Manchester United are negotiating for Raphael Varane.

Hammers turn back to happy hunting ground

West Ham are interested in Spartak Moscow midfielder Alex Kral,a Czech Republic team-mate of Tomas Soucek and Vladimír Coufal.

The Hammers pair were signed from Slavia Prague, Kral’s former club before he moved to Russia. And David Moyes is also monitoring Senegal forward Abdallah Sima from the Czech champions.

Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence, 20, has also been on the radar of West Ham as well as Norwich and Everton.

Spence played 40 games for the Championship side last season.

Rovers for Barlow

Former Manchester United midfielder Aidan Barlow is set to sign for Doncaster Rovers tomorrow after a successful trial with the League One club.
