EastEnders’ Janine Butcher looks set to be making a rather explosive return when she heads back to Walford after seven years away.

Actress Charlie Brooks was pictured filming scenes for the BBC soap covered in soot and ash.

In the photos, the 40-year-old soap star is wearing a black jumpsuit with a gold buckled belt and a matching chain as she enjoys some lunch in between takes.

Despite wearing large sunglasses, it's clear to see that her face is covered in black marks – which could give EastEnders fans an indication as to how she will arrive in Albert Square.

Charlie was last seen in the soap back in 2014 when she was on trial for the murder of Michael Moon.

When Kat Slater visited Janine in prison, she tried to convince her to drop her statement against Stacey.

Janine agreed on the condition that Kat provided her with a false witness testimony to Michael's murder, backing up Janine's story that Alice Branning killed him – which Kat agreed to.

At the trial, when Janine heard that Alice had self-harmed, she decided to tell the truth which led the jury to return a not guilty verdict for both Alice and Janine.

In April of this year it was announced that Charlie had agreed to reprise the role of Janine once again for a "huge storyline" and would return later this year.

Last month neighbours who live close to the EastEnders set reported hearing explosions and evidence of a huge fireball engulfing Albert Square.

Soap bosses are obviously keen to keep the fireball plot under wraps, but local residents saw the smoke and heard a collection of emergency service vehicles wailing.

A source told Metro: "There were ambulances and fire engines and a lot of smoke. It was definitely not an emergency, they were filming something."

An insider added: "The explosion is really the start of a massive autumn for the show that will take them through the rest of the year."

Charlie recently admitted that she feels like it's the right time to finally return to the BBC soap that made her a household name after quitting booze and gaining confidence.

Charlie turned 40 in May, and the milestone birthday made her take stock.

“If I hadn’t made some of the changes that I’d made in my life, 40 might have felt very different,” she told The Mirror.

“It was time to stop listening to the bull**t in my head, basically. I feel enormously different. It feels exciting and a new chapter.”

EastEnders usually airs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings on BBC One but all of this week’s episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.
