Luke Shaw suffered his rib injury against Germany
Manchester United want to assess Luke Shaw’s fitness for the start of the season after he played at the Euros with broken ribs.
The England full-back suffered the injury in the last-16 game against Germany but played through the pain barrier to help Gareth Southgate’s team reach the final.
It is thought that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his staff would have preferred Shaw to have returned to Carrington immediately for scans to determine the extent of the damage, but players involved in the final nine days ago were granted holiday and have not been part of their clubs’ pre-season yet.
Solskjaer is already expected to be without Marcus Rashford for the start of the new campaign as he needs shoulder surgery.
Shaw played through his injury to help Southgate’s team reach the final, and he scored early against Italy as England atempted to win their first major tournament since 1966.
United want to assess Shaw before it is determined how much of pre-season he will be able to play in. He is currently on holiday in Greece after being given a post-Euros break. United started their pre-season with a friendly against Derby at the weekend.
Losing Shaw would be a major blow to Solskjaer. The 26 year-old’s form last season saw him force his way back into the England squad before becoming one of Southgate’s key players at the Euros.
Shaw himself admitted that it was unlikely he would have been involved at the European Championship without the tournament being delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, he seized his opportunity and moved ahead of Ben Chilwell in Southgate’s left-back pecking order.
Last summer United moved for Brazilian left-back Alex Telles. His arrival from Porto added competition for Shaw and saw the Englishman’s form dramatically improve throughout the season.
Southgate started with Kieran Trippier at left-back in the opening Euros clash against Croatia but Shaw played in every game afterwards, through to the final, and was only subbed against Ukraine when victory was secured in the last eight.
