Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has made an admission over Sergio Aguero's fitness which Manchester City understand all too well.

Aguero, 33, joined Barca on a two-year contract earlier this summer after his decade-long spell at the Etihad came to an end.

The Argentinian ace is City's record goalscorer and he is considered one of the best strikers in Premier League history.

But the closing stages of his time with Pep Guardiola's side were characterised by regular injury issues and a lack of match fitness.

Aguero managed just eight starts in all competition last season, but Koeman is confident he can get back to peak physical condition.

"The other front player is Kun Aguero, from City. He's really experienced, really good quality in the box," the Dutchman told club media.

"He's a finishing player, scoring goals and let's hope that we can put him on a good physical level. I think he lost a little bit last season.

"He had some injuries and was not physically top where you need to be to play but we give him that possibility to come to that level.

Koeman is relishing the prospect of unleashing Aguero in an attack alongside his compatriot and close friend Lionel Messi, who is expected to sign a new contract at Camp Nou.

Barcelona will also welcome back teenage sensation Ansu Fati after a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury, while Memphis Depay joined on a free transfer from Lyon.

Discussing Aguero further, Koeman added: "[He] makes the difference up front with Messi, Depay, Ansu Fati, [Antoine] Griezmann, [Martin] Braithwaite. We have good competition in those kind of positions."

Despite missing swathes of the domestic 2020/21 season with knee and hamstring injuries as well as a bout of coronavirus, Aguero was fit enough to travel to Copa America this summer.

The veteran made four appearances and laid on one assist as Argentina triumphed in the competition to win their first major trophy in 28 years.

Lionel Scaloni's side defeated Brazil in the final thanks to Angel Di Maria's winner, with Aguero claiming captain Messi "needed it the most".

He told Mundo Deportivo : "Leo was very excited, he was the one who needed it the most.

"He had already won many titles, but he knew that a title with the national team would give him that extra joy to be more calm and relaxed. He deserved it. He is very happy, and we realise that his happiness is our happiness.

"It is a different, incredible happiness. Difficult to explain the feeling. We couldn’t believe it, we were shocked. Until we got to the AFA podium we couldn’t believe it, against Brazil, in Brazil."
