Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, 35, were once two of the most famous child stars on the planet.

Their acting career began when they were just nine months old, when they starred in sitcom Full House, both playing Michelle Tanner.

Aged just six, the twins started starring in multiple films including New York Minute, Two of a Kind, Passport To Paris, and Switching Goals.

They also founded their own company, Dulstar, which produced every bit of merchandise imaginable from fragrances, dolls and calendars to video games and CD players.

There was even a Mary-Kate and Ashley fan club which would send subscribers gifts each month as well as a magazine dedicated to the girls.

In 2007, Forbes ranked them as the eleventh-richest women in entertainment, with an estimated net worth of £72 million.

In 2012, they announced they were retiring from acting to focus on their fashion label, The Row, and they also run clothing lines Elizabeth and James, Olsenboye, and StyleMint.

"We’ve been there, we’ve done that, we started out that way," Mary-Kate told Elle, when quizzed on if they would ever return to acting.

"But this is the way we chose to move forward in our lives: to not be in the spotlight, to really have something that speaks for itself."

They stayed off social media and are incredibly private, residing in luxurious New York townhouses, but they have both faced immense heartache.

The twins were already reported to be addicted to coffee aged just ten, and it seemed the pressure of the spotlight was having a detrimental effect.

They dropped out of NYU after classmates sold stories on them and invaded their privacy.

And they were pictured smoking and drinking heavily, being reportedly carried out of Oasis’s dressing room after one too many, and almost throwing up on Penelope Cruz at Naomi Campbell’s 35th birthday bash.

And they both embarked on relationships with much older men, which only ended in heartbreak.

Mary-Kate has had a publicised battle with anorexia and entered rehab as a teenager in 2004, leading to a Got Milk? advert the twins had filmed being pulled shortly afterwards.

She had already attracted headlines for her shrinking frame, but had poked fun at her weight on Saturday Night Live.

Playing paparazzi photographers, they shouted: “Mary-Kate, you’re so skinny—eat a sandwich!”

They also dodged the topic during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, who asked their dress size, and they ignored the question.

PEOPLE reported Mary-Kates' loved ones staged an intervention, and she was then committed to a treatment facility.

Her publicist at the time stated she "made a very courageous, precautionary decision".

"Mary-Kate is taking charge in making this decision. She wants to be healthy," she added.

Mary-Kate never publicly confirmed she had an eating disorder, but told Elle: "Look, I think it's important that what anybody goes through – and I'm not saying that it's true or not true – you realise it's part of growing up.

"Everybody is going to go through hard times. It's a part of life," she said.

She added that "asking for help" and "being honest with yourself" is "the hardest part."

One of Mary-Kate's ex-boyfriends, Stavros Niarchos III, went on to date her friend Paris Hilton, and it was reported the two women fell out over it.

"[Paris and I] always only had nice things to say about each other. Now I guess you can tell we’re not talking," she told W magazine.

Mary-Kate was linked to Heath Ledger and was reportedly dating him when he died of a drug overdose, in 2008, at the age of 27.

The housekeeper called Mary-Kate, who was in California at the time, for help when she found him.

Mary-Kate sent a private security guard to the apartment, who called 911 when he got there, but tragically the actor could not be revived.

But she never publicly commented on his death, or confirmed the nature of their relationship.

Mary-Kate then married French banker Olivier Sarkozy, brother of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, 17 years her senior.

They married in 2014 after three years of dating, in New York City – with Mary-Kate becoming stepmum to his two children, Julien, 20, and Margot, 17.

But Mary-Kate filed for divorce in April last year, requesting an emergency divorce order the next day, alleging Olivier was forcing her out of their home just as the coronavirus pandemic started to take hold.

He reportedly moved his ex-wife, Charlotte Bernard, their two children and his mother into their shared home as soon as she left.

In a summons and complaint filed to New York's Supreme Court on April 17, Mary-Kate wrote: "It was clear my marriage was over… the relationship has broken down irretrievably."

She added: "My husband has terminated the lease on our New York City residence … without my consent.

"This application is an emergency because my husband expects me to move out of our home on Monday, May 18, 2020 in the middle of New York City being on pause due to COVID-19.

"I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."

Olivier was said to be concerned about the coronavirus outbreak and wanted to keep his family safe.

The request was denied, and their divorce was finalised in January 2021 over a Zoom call with both parties and their lawyers.

As for why they split, PEOPLE Magazine reported Mary-Kate wanted to have a baby, while dad-of-two Sarkozy was less keen.

A source told the publication: "A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for [Mary-Kate]. This has changed."

It was recently reported Mary-Kate celebrated her 34th birthday in The Hamptons with Ashley, marking the special occasion by having a slap up dinner together, followed by a movie night.

Ashley Olsen also dated older men

The older of the twins, Ashley also found love with older men, dating financier Richard Sachs, who was 28 years her senior.

The relationship didn’t last and the actress-turned-fashion mogul has been linked to Still House Group artist Louis Eisner, who she has been quietly dating since 2017.

He recently shared a photo of his love walking through the woods holding a machete in a rare public appearance.

Wearing a matching white sweatshirt and rolled up trousers, Ashley paired the look with a pair of large black shades, a back-to-front baseball cap and Yeezys.

And for an unknown reason, Ashley was holding a machete in her hand – with a beer in the other.

Ashley also dated disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in 2007 when they were spotted getting cosy in a bar.

According to the book Cycle Of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong, Lance, who is 15 years older than Ashley, was encouraged to dump her to preserve his image.

She was also once seen kissing actor Jared Leto in a club, and was then linked to older men including David Schulte, president of the The Row, then 44, film director Bennett Miller, then 49, and artist George Condo, then 59.

The twins recently explained why they tried to stay out of the spotlight as they got older.

Mary-Kate told i-D: "We were raised to be discreet people."

Ashley then continued: "I think that potentially that's just our aesthetic, our design preference.

"But that doesn't mean that we don't also appreciate something truly ornate or maximal. Sometimes a collection even starts quite like that, and then gets pared down.

"It doesn't always start from that simplistic place."

Their younger sister Elizabeth Olsen is now one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood.

The 31-year-old WandaVision star previously said her older sisters' intense fame almost put her off acting.

On growing up with her famous sisters, she said: "It was insanity.

"There were times when my sisters would always be spotted, and I would be in the car with them, and it would really freak me out.

"People were obsessed with them turning 18, it's weird growing up with that. It has helped me navigate how I want to approach my career.

"I always had this need to prove myself to everyone around me that I work hard.

"There was even a part of me when I was a little girl that thought if I'm going to be an actress I'm going to go by Elizabeth Chase, which is my middle name."

She added: "And then, once I started working, I was like, 'I love my family, I like my name, I love my sisters.

"Why would I be so ashamed of that?' It's fine now."
