Hopes of a bank holiday to mark England making it to the final of the Euros have been dashed after Downing Street said i being considered".

Boris Johnson's official spokesman said the Prime Minister was in contact with the Football Association about honouring Gareth Southgate's team, but that a bank holiday was not part of any plans.

It comes after England's crushing defeat to Italy on Sunday night on penalties.

The spokesman added:“We’ll be talking to the FA to identify a suitable way for the Prime Minister to thank the players and coaching staff for their efforts.

“But a bank holiday is not something that is being considered.”

Downing Street, meanwhile criticised England fans who stormed Wembley Stadium without tickets and caused trouble in Trafalgar Square on Sunday.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Those scenes were unacceptable and we condemn violence, anti-social behaviour and abuse in the strongest possible terms.”

Asked whether the level of policing was adequate, the spokesman said: “As with all major policing operations there will be lessons to be learned.”

But he said Boris Johnson retains confidence in Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, saying: “He does have confidence.”
