A boss insisted they had "no choice" but to sack their employee after pulling a sickie to attend England's win over Denmark on Wednesday.

It came as the Three Lions reached their first final in 55 years following a 2-1 win over the Danes at Wembley.

The final is set to go ahead on Sunday night with some around the country wondering whether or not to call in sick the next day if the English win.

"It’s mixed emotions: we’re through to the final, I’m still on that high, but I’ve also lost my job," she told the Telegraph.

"My friend won the ticket in her work ballot, and knew I'd do anything to get to the game – there was no way I was going to turn it down.

"This hasn’t come around since 1996, I vividly remember crying on my mum's sofa when Gareth Southgate missed his penalty, and the football fan in me just couldn’t do it. Football is my life."
