Celebrity chef Rick Stein has been branded “rude” after he was accused of not getting permission to eat his own food in a Cornish pub.

The TV chef, 74, is currently filming his Rick Stein’s Cornwall series, which sees him touring the county showing off his favourite eats.

However, Rick’s tour of Cornwall hasn’t been plain sailing as staff at the Red Lion pub in Newlyn have claimed he and his production crew never asked if they could eat their own food in the bar’s beer garden.

Speaking to Cornwall Live, the landlady of the Red Lion, who took over the pub in March, branded the restauranteur “rude” when she confronted him about not ordering from the pub’s kitchen.

She began: "I went over and said, ‘I appreciate you're halfway through your meal, it's fine for you to carry on, but I've spoken to my staff, and they say you've not asked them. We're a pub which serves it's own food, we don't appreciate other meals being eaten here.’

He said he spoke to staff, and they said it's fine, but I told him, ‘I have just spoken to them’. He was really rude. I said, ‘There's no need to be rude to me’, but he said, ‘you've been rude since the moment we got here’.

"Another table then piped up and asked him not to be like that. They saw a guy being rude to me and didn't know who he was. They said, 'don't be like that to her'. One of them said, 'go back to where you came from' to Rick, so he turned around to him and said, 'where are you from then?'"

However, Stein and his production crew have denied the claims and told the publication they were given permission to eat outside.

The Mirror have contacted Rick Stein’s rep for comment.

Last March, Rick found himself in hot water when it was reported that he refused to pay the staff at his restaurants which were closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

At the time, he told his employees they will not receive their wages until the government's Furlough scheme came through, leaving his staff without wages for a month.

In a message on the company’s internal message board, obtained by the Daily Mail, managing director Ian Fitzgerald told employees: "We cannot afford to pay anybody after March 21.

"If we were to do that the company will be gone within a few weeks. This is a terrible thing to be telling you, but it is the most responsible thing we can do to save your job."

Fitzgerald added that as soon as the government cash injection comes through, staff will "‘will receive it immediately."

Stein has four restaurants in the UK, including one in London.

Following the report, Rick released a statement defending his decision not to pay his workers, insisting that the government needed to stump up the cash more quickly.

The statement also insisted that if the company continued to payroll staff up until the subsidy came through, then they might have had to pull the shutter down for good.
