American star Lizzo has received praise online after footage emerged of the Truth Hurts singer correcting a paparazzi who accidentally misgendered Demi Lovato, who has gone on to dub the pop star a "Queen" for her allyship.

Lizzo was being snapped as she walked down the street when a male voice is heard off-camera asking the star about Demi, who came out as non-binary earlier this year.

The 33-year-old was asked if she would be hitting the stage with the singer at the upcoming Jazz Fest 2021 in New Orleans, where both stars are set to perform.

"Do you have a message for Demi? Should she reach out?" the person asked.

Instantly, Lizzo responded with the 28-year-old's new pronouns, simply replying, "They".

When the paparazzo went on to accidentally refer to Demi using their previous she/her pronouns, Lizzo again corrected their mistake.

"Their team," she said after hearing the pap say "her team."

" Demi goes by they," she concluded.

The 28-year-old singer and actor recently revealed to the world that they identified as non-binary after a long journey becoming comfortable with their gender.

Sharing the news on Instagram in May this year, the star wrote: "Today is a day I'm so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward."

Non-binary, or genderqueer, is an umbrella term for gender identities that are neither male nor female‍—‌identities that are outside the gender binary

The singer has been open and honest about their gender identity

Demi recently moved actress Jane Fonda to tears during a candid chat where the singer opened up about their battles over the years.

Speaking to the legendary activist on their podcast, Demi was telling the 83-year-old about how they freed themselves from gender norms following their near-death experience in 2018, when they were hospitalised following a drug overdose

“What you’re saying is so brave. It’s so, so brave, I wish I could hug you right now,” Jane told the former X Factor judge.

She added: “I’m so glad to hear you say all this, Demi. I’m just so proud of you and I’m so glad, and I admire it so much. I’m so glad that you came out of that because I’ve seen the documentary, that you came out of that with that realisation and that you’re finding your real truth and it’s just wonderful. It’s just wonderful.”
