Leon Goretzka has already turned down Liverpool and his explanation spells bad news for Manchester United.

It comes as the Red Devils ramp up their efforts to land the Bayern Munich star this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his midfield options going into next season with several on his shortlist.

Jadon Sancho is already on the way after United agreed a fee with Borussia Dortmund in the region of £73m, while a five-year contract has been finalised.

There is also growing uncertainty over Paul Pogba's situation as he enters the final year of his own contract at Old Trafford.

Bayern star Leon Goretzka has been linked with a move to United

However, Liverpool were interested in Goretzka once upon a time – right before he signed for Bayern.

When the midfielder was plying his trade for Schalke, several clubs were taking a closer look as his contract dwindled down.

But Bayern Munich won the battle and managed to snap him up on a free transfer in 2018, where he has become a key part of the squad.

When asked by The Athletic about Liverpool’s interest, the Germany international said: “They were a consideration, of course.

“They’re a great club, and their development since Klopp came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title.

"But I took a long time making my decision, and I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”

That spells danger for United, who might have to do something special to convince him to abandon his dream club.

Bayern will have their own worries, though, with Goretzka in the final year of his contract.

They will want to avoid a similar situation to that of David Alaba, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer when his deal expired this year.

However, Goretzka loves being at Bayern Munich and would prefer to stay if that was the option.

If United pursue a move for the German, it would surely mean that Pogba will be on his way out of the club.

After a number of years where his agent Mino Raiola has threatened his client's departure, he might now finally get his way but Solskjaer does not want to lose the Frenchman.

Juventus, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are long-term admirers but it remains to be seen whether or not they can afford the 28-year-old.
