Here is England's path through the round of 16 and beyond

On a night of high drama at Euro 2020, Sweden’s late winner against Poland opened up a potentially inviting path to the final for England – if they can beat Germany on Tuesday.

The winner of that last-16 tie plays the victor of Sweden vs Ukraine in the quarter-final. Then a potentially favourable semi-final draw would see Gareth Southgate’s side go on to play the eventual winner of the other two last-16 clashes in their half of the draw: Wales vs Denmark and Netherlands vs Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, the majority of tournament form teams and apparent big guns – including Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and France – go in the other half, and can rule out a potential meeting with England until the final.

Jason Burt’s last-16 predictions

Croatia vs Spain
After two frustrating draws the floodgates opened for Spain against Slovakia and that will help give them the edge. Not that Croatia with Luka Modric and with their experience can be discounted and they recovered well after losing their opening group game against England. Spain should have too much but it could be tight.
Score: 0-1

France vs Switzerland
The favourites have not been at their best – yet – but still won the toughest group. They have prepared well for the knock-out stages and will have far too much for Switzerland who are resilient and organised but do not pose a threat for the World Cup winners. A win even more comfortable than the scoreline would suggest.
Score: 2-0

England vs Germany
England will have had a day’s more rest and will be at home but there is no doubt this is a huge step up from what they have faced so far. We also know how much this means and not least for Gareth Southgate. What a way to exorcise the demons of Euro 96. Germany are dangerous but are not the sum of their parts.
Score: 2-1

Sweden vs Ukraine
Sweden have been what is expected of them: organised, resilient and able to churn out results. They deservedly won their group to set up a tie which they should win. Ukraine have failed to live up to their billing as dark horses, given their strong record coming into the finals.
Score: 2-1
