Arsenal are hopeful of reaching an agreement with Benfica over left-back Nuno Tavares, who has been identified as a promising back-up option for Kieran Tierney.

A second left-back has been a priority for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta since Sead Kolasinac was loaned to Schalke in the January transfer window.

Without an alternative to Tierney, Arteta was forced to field midfielder Granit Xhaka in the left-back position towards the end of last season.

Arsenal are hoping to pay less than £10 million for Tavares, who has represented Portugal at youth level and played against Arteta’s side in the Europa League last season.

Kolasinac still has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract but is expected to leave the club on a permanent basis this summer.

Meanwhile Arsenal are also hopeful of completing a deal for Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga as they look to overhaul their midfield before the start of the new season.

Belgian sources expect a deal to be agreed imminently, with the 21-year-old midfielder understood to be available for a fee in the region of £15m to £20m.

Arsenal also remain in negotiations with Brighton for Ben White. The England defender is expected to cost around £50m following his impressive debut season in the Premier League.

Technical director Edu and director of football operations Richard Garlick are simultaneously working on a series of departures from the first-team squad.

They are in advanced negotiations with Roma over Xhaka, who starred for Switzerland in their dramatic victory over France on Monday night, while Marseille are among the teams interested in Matteo Guendouzi.

The likes of Lucas Torreira, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could also leave, as could midfielder Joe Willock who is wanted by Newcastle United following his successful loan spell last season.

There remains uncertainty over the goalkeeping position, with Bernd Leno also on the list of potential departees. Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale has been identified as a target.

One player who Arsenal do not intend to sell is Emile Smith Rowe, who has been the subject of two bids from Aston Villa. A second offer of £30m was instantly rejected and Arsenal are insistent the playmaker is not for sale.
