Serena Williams practises ahead of Wimbledon

Presenters Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts differ in how far they think Serena Williams and Roger Federer will go this fortnight, but all agreed on The Tennis Podcast preview show that this is their last chance to win it.

“It’s definitely now or never,” said Whitaker, on the podcast, which will air every night after play during Wimbledon.

“If you handed them a final or a semi right now, they would not take it. They are here to win, and realistically it’s their last chance. I think Federer has a tricky first round in Adrian Mannarino, but see him coming through that. I think he’ll go deep, but I can’t see him winning the title. Serena has a better chance of going all the way.”

Law agreed. “I’ve got Serena making the final and Federer in the semis, but ultimately they will leave disappointed. For Serena, trying to match Margaret Court’s record of 24 major titles, and Federer [20] aiming to pull clear of Nadal [20] and Djokovic [19], there is an enormous amount at stake historically. But I just can’t see it happening.”

Roberts disagreed regarding Williams. He said that he sees this as the moment she wins her 24th major title.

“I didn’t think I would be predicting her to win another Grand Slam title, but I’m just so persuaded by her record at Wimbledon. She has not failed to reach the Wimbledon final in a year that she has played it since 2014. That’s four finals since then. I’m predicting it to be Serena’s title.”

The podcast also covers the chances of Novak Djokovic, Ashleigh Barty and Andy Murray, and asks Dan Evans whether he looks beyond the first round of tournaments.

The Tennis Podcast will be available to stream or download every night after play during Wimbledon, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or any other podcast app.

It is the most-listened-to tennis podcast in the UK, US, Canada and Australia and airs twice weekly throughout the year and daily during all four Grand Slam tournaments.
