A knifeman has killed at least three people and wounded six, German media reported tonight.

The incident took place at Barbarossaplatz in the city of Würzburg in Bavaria, with local media reporting multiple stabbings.

German public broadcaster Bayerische Rundfunk said police were alerted at around 5pm.

The perpetrator was stopped after being shot in the leg and was taken into custody, BILD reports.

Police have launched a "major operation" and said they are still at the scene of the incident.

Officers have not confirmed the number of casualties, but said there are "several injuries and also fatalities to mourn".

There is no longer any danger to the population, police said.
