A murder probe has been launched after an elderly woman was found dead in Essex.

The alleged victim, aged in her 80s, was found at an address in Grays at around 5pm on Monday, police said.

A local woman, aged in her 60s and known to the deceased, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said they do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses and said anyone with information should call 101.

A statement said: "We were called to an address on Lenmore Avenue shortly after 5pm to reports that the victim, a woman in her 80s, was unresponsive.

Forensic officers were spotted at the scene on Monday

"Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 60-year-old local woman, known to the victim, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"We do not believe that there is any threat to the wider public.

"Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call us on 101 or submit a form on our website.

"Please quote incident number 1019 of 21 June."
