Piers Morgan has bitten back at a 'slur' saying he is transphobic after he entered the row after the the first ever transgender athlete was confirmed for this summer's Olympics.

The debate has raged following the inclusion of transwoman Laurel Hubbard in the 2020 Tokyo squad.

It has recently been announced that the weightlifter would be the first transgender athlete in history to compete in the Games.

Many have backed the move as a real win for trans rights, but some have criticised the IOC move.

Piers wrote on Twitter : "Allowing a transgender weightlifter to compete in the Tokyo Olympics is a terrible mistake that destroys women’s rights to equality and fairness – and will kill the Olympic dream for female athletes."

He also called a controversial article in The Times on the issue of transgender women in competitive sport 'terrific' – and was attacked again for his view.

Piers tweeted the piece and argued that trans women "retain biological advantages of men" to his 7.9 million followers – and it quickly descended into a Twitter row.

One user in particular took issue with his support of the story.

Writer Charlotte Clymer wrote: "Yep, there's @piersmorgan, tweeting out blatant anti-trans propaganda that he knows to be anti-trans because it supports his discomfort with trans people in sports. Of course, if he did the actual *work* of understanding this issue in good faith, he might get somewhere."

Piers didn't hold back and says he is not alone in his views.

He told her: "I’m not anti-trans & resent that slur. I support the rights of transgender people to be treated equally & fairly. But as @Caitlyn_Jenner said recently, it’s unfair for trans women athletes to compete against women born to female bodies. She should know, probably better than you."

He had earlier been bluntly asked if he was transphobic.

He replied: "No, I just don't believe transgender rights should supersede women's rights."

Piers said before: "I’m afraid this is patronising nonsense. Everyone knows transgender women athletes have a significant biological advantage over women born to female bodies.

"To pretend otherwise is woke virtue-signalling disingenuous guff that damages women’s rights to fairness & equality."

After one of his followers suggested that "woke fascists" only exist online, Piers wrote back: "Yes, but they wield unhealthy & irrational power… the real world’s terrified of upsetting the wokies. That needs to stop.

"The woke brigade’s way to conduct a debate is to bully & shame anyone that disagrees with their often ludicrous opinions by labelling the person ‘transphobic’, ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ etc, even when there is zero evidence to support this.

"It’s pathetic. They’re the new fascists," he added.
