A six-year-old girl has died and her dad has been injured after a crash last night in Stoke-on-Trent.

Emergency services were called to the tragedy in Norton Green at around 7.15pm.

Despite the frantic efforts of passers-by, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had been walking with her father, who is being treated for his injuries.

In a statement police said the driver had suffered a head injury in the crash.

Inspector Lee Robinson, of Staffordshire Police, said: “We do not yet understand fully what has happened and so I’d urge people to avoid the area while we investigate and please not to speculate as to the circumstances.

“However, I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident, or may have CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch and assist our enquiries.

“The girl’s family will be supported by specially trained officers and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Today flowers had been laid at the scene of the tragedy.

In a statement police said: "We are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at around 7.15pm in Endon Road.

"The girl and her father were reportedly struck by a car as they were walking along Endon Road.

"Despite the best efforts of passers-by the girl, aged six, was pronounced dead at the scene."

Anyone with information about the crash has been urged to contact police by calling 101.
