The UK is "definitely" experiencing a third wave of Covid infections – with more than 80 per cent of towns and cities in England recording a weekly rise in cases.

In the past week the number of people testing positive has risen by a third, with 61,181 new infections confirmed after the Delta variant forced Boris Johnson to postpone 'Freedom Day' until at least next month.

The number of infections passed 10,000 per day for the first time since February this week – sparking a race between the spread of the virus and the vaccine programme.

Speaking this morning, Professor Adam Finn, who advises the Government on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), said a "third wave" of coronavirus infections "is definitely under way".

Latest data shows that 258 of England's 315 local authority areas have recorded a week-on-week rise in cases, with North Tyneside, Liverpool, County Durham, Cornwall and Hyndburn recording the sharpest increases.

University of Bristol academic Prof Finn told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "It's going up, perhaps we can be a little bit optimistic it's not going up any faster, but nevertheless it's going up, so this third wave is definitely under way.

"We can conclude that the race is firmly on between the vaccine programme, particularly getting older people's second doses done, and the Delta variant third wave."

Prof Finn said the JCVI is still working to decide whether children should be vaccinated but said that effort would not be the immediate priority if it was approved.

"Even if some decision were made to immunise children it wouldn't be appropriate right now, either here or anywhere else in Europe, to give our doses predominantly to children because it's adults that get sick, so vaccinating adults is clearly the priority right now," he said.

  • UK's longest-known Covid patient, 49, dies after he 'couldn't live like this anymore'

Last night the Department of Health said 42,460,632 people have had a first jab and 30,898,467 – 58.7 per cent of the adult population – have had both doses.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • North Tyneside (up from 78.4 to 190.9)
  • Liverpool (68.9 to 159.6)
  • County Durham (39.6 to 128.8)
  • Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (12.2 to 99.5)
  • Hyndburn (368.9 to 455.3)

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 804 new cases in the seven days to June 14 – the equivalent of 537.1 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 667.4 in the seven days to June 7.

Hyndburn in Lancashire has the second highest rate, up from 368.9 to 455.3, with 369 new cases.

Ribble Valley, also in Lancashire, has the third highest, up from 386.0 to 418.8, with 255 new cases.

Dr Mike Tildesley, epidemiologist and a member of the SPI-M modelling group, said he is "cautiously hopeful" that the number of Covid-19 hospital admissions over the next few weeks will not be on the same scale as what happened in January.

He told BBC Breakfast: "We are now in a situation where if we sort of wind back a month ago we were starting to see signs of cases creeping up, and they have been creeping steadily for the last four weeks, but we haven't yet seen that reflected in hospital admissions and deaths, which makes me sort of cautiously optimistic about the situation.

"Hospital admissions are starting to rise a little bit, and of course there's always a lag when cases rise that we see any signal in hospital admissions, but of course the vaccination campaign is doing very, very well, and so we're not in the same situation we were back in October when cases were rising, we then got a big wave of hospital admissions and deaths."
