Hugh Grant has denied claims that he married his wife Anna Elisabet Eberstein for "passport reasons".

The Notting Hill actor, 60, tied the knot with the Swedish TV producer in 2018 after they welcomed three children together.

Despite the fact that they already share and family and have been married for over four years, Hugh was forced to set the record straight about their love story after a Google results link claimed the actor married Anna for "passport reasons".

The Love Actually favourite took to Twitter to put the speculation to bed when he insisted that he married his wife because he loved her.

“No, I didn’t, @Internet. I married her because I love her,” Hugh hit back.

In response to a Twitter user who joked that the actor had "forgot who his wife is and had to google it", Hugh clarified that a friend had sent him the screenshot

“No, a friend sent it to me actually,” he replied.

Hugh previously stated that he and his wife think that marriage is a "pretty preposterous social construct".

In an interview with USA Today, he discussed the different names on their passports as he opened up about how he finally decided to settle down and marry Anna.

He said: “I didn't like going through immigration into countries where they'd say, ‘Everyone with a Grant passport over here, and all the others through there.’

“Anna went through with the nannies. That seemed all wrong.”

The Bridget Jones star tied the knot with Anna – his on and off partner of nine years – at in May 2018 – six years after they welcomed their first child together.

The lovebirds married in a low-key ceremony held at a register office in Chelsea, close to the pair's £10million home in West London.

The couple have remained famously private down through the years, and neither have ever confirmed where they first met.

Hugh and Anna are proud parents to son John, eight, and two daughters, born in 2015 and 2018, whose names remain unknown.

The actor also shares two children with ex Tinglan Hong; daughter Tabitha and their son Felix.

Hugh previously admitted becoming a father was the best thing to ever happen to him after years of living the single life.
