Actor John Paragon has died at the age of 66.

The star, was most famous for his role as Jambi the Genie on Pee-wee's Playhouse.

TMZ says that The Riverside County Coroner confirmed his death and says he passed away in April but cause of death is unclear at this point.

In his role as Jambi the Genie, John's face appeared in a jewelled box whenever the show's main character Pee-wee Herman wished for something.

John would appear dressed in blue makeup with a red and gold turban as he portrayed the sassy character.

As well as the genie, John was also the voice of Pterri the Pterodactyl on the show.

He also wrote several episodes for the hit show and worked alongside Paul Reubens to create the script for Pee-wee's Playhouse: Christmas Special in 1988.

The production earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Best Writing in a Children's Special.

Other appearances on the television included parts on Seinfeld, while he was on the big screen in films such as The Frog Prince, Eating Raoul and Echo Park.

Playhouse ran stateside from 1986 to 1991 and John reprised his popular role as the genie in 2010's Broadway adaptation of The Pee-wee Herman Show.

His most recent experience came as an idea man for Walt Disney Imagineering for improv performances at the Disney theme parks.

The 66-year-old was born in Alaska, but grew up and attended schools in Colorado.

His acting career began when he was part of a Los Angeles-based improvisation group called The Groundlings. There, he acted alongside Paul Reubens and Phil Hartman.

Friends and fans of the actor took to social media to send their condolences.

Screenwriter Michael Varrati wrote on Twitter : "Sad to hear that John Paragon, known for his role as Jambi the Genie, has passed.

"A cult filmmaker & figure in his own right, I was fortunate to have done a gig w/ him awhile ago where he proved to be gracious and tolerant of my nerdy questions. Rest well, thanks for the magic."

Another fan took to the site to thank the star, writing: "Thank you for remembering an essential part of my childhood. I consistently attribute my taste for the bizarre to Pee Wee's playhouse as an early influence. It's such a lovely oddball piece of television! RIP John Paragon!"

And a third put: "John Paragon was a BIG part of my childhood. I’m so glad I got to see him perform Jambi in “The @PeeWeeHerman Show” live during its run in Los Angeles some years back. This evening’s news makes me very sad. RIP."
