Arsenal’s transfer window looks at the point of lift off, with a number of moves now reported.

Mikel Arteta has been honest and open about the importance of this summer, admitting that the squad needed to change after a miserable season.

The Spaniard could only guide the Gunners to eighth in the Premier League as they missed out on European football for the first time in a quarter of a century.

“The squad needs changing,” he said towards the end of last campaign. “There were already a lot of changes in December, something that has not been done in years, but it tells us where we were. Things are going to have to change and the owners are going to back it up.”

Arteta has since revealed he has held positive talks with Josh Kroenke, who he says remains committed to the project, despite significant backlash from supporters.

And while the eyes of the footballing world are focused on the European Championships, Arsenal are busily going about the business.

In recent days, they have seen an offer of £40million rejected by Brighton for England defender Ben White.

Arsenal are keen to add some defensive reinforcements, particularly after David Luiz was allowed to leave the club at the expiry of his contract.

Reports have also suggested that Anderlecht have rebuffed an opening offer for Albert Sambi Lokonga. Thierry Henry is a huge fan of the Belgian and is hoping to persuade Emirates chiefs to ramp up their interest.

As well as White and Lokonga, Mail Sport claim that Arsenal have identified James Maddison as their main transfer target.

Bringing Martin Odegaard back to north London is looking increasingly difficult and the Leicester City star is seen as a more than viable alternative.

These moves won’t come cheap, particularly Maddison, with the Foxes rejecting a £70m bid from an unnamed club last summer.

But according to Football.London, a loan taken out earlier this year could help to cover the costs of their summer transfer spree.

How many players do Arsenal need to sign in the summer window? Let us know

The Gunners took out a £120m loan at the start of 2021 to help cover for the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

That has subsequently been repaid, although a second loan was taken out just last month. It has been suggested that there are no restrictions on the loan, giving Arsenal the freedom to spend on transfers before player sales this summer.

However, Arsenal are in the process of moving a number of players on, all of whom could bring in a significant transfer fee.

Eddie Nketiah, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Hector Bellerin, Lucas Torreira and Joe Willock could all be sold, while Granit Xhaka edges closer to a move to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

One player who isn’t for sale however is Emile Smith Rowe, the Gunners firmly rejected Aston Villa’s £25m offer for the midfielder and they have no intention of selling a player they hope to tie to a new long-term deal.
