Naya Rivera's dad has opened up about how her son is doing after she tragically died last summer.

George Rivera says the five-year-old, who was with Naya when she died, is "really strong" and "handling it really well".

The former Glee star was pronounced dead in July 2020, five days after she went missing at California's Lake Piru while taking a boat ride with Josey. She was just 33-years-old.

George has now said that Josey talks about his mum frequently as he has memories of her and what happened on that tragic day.

Naya's dad credits Josey's father, Ryan Dorsey, and Naya's younger sister, Nickayla Rivera, with helping the little boy cope.

Ryan and Naya were married from 2014 until 2018.

George told Entertainment Tonight: "Nickayla and Ryan are doing a really great job.

"Tough situation, especially because he was there – it's not like you're talking about a ghost that's floating around, right?

"He's got memories as well, but boy is he coming around, right? Really strong kid."

He added: "We handle him and we talk to him just like he's a 5-year-old going on six.

"It's no different but when he wants to talk about his mother, we talk about his mother, in conversation.

"He's growing up and handling it really well."

Authorities believe that Naya drowned after swimming with Josey, but she managed to use the last of her energy to push Josey back onto the boat into safety.

It would take six days for Naya's body to be recovered, but Josey was found safe asleep on a rented boat on the lake.

And George believes this says a lot about the kind of person the TV star was.

He continued: "Sort of the same mantra she used for life, you know, preservation, keep going, when things are hard you keep pushing.

"It just shows you the strength of the person."

George previously revealed that just before Naya died, he warned her not to go swimming in the lake.
