Amanda Owens and her brood have found fame on Channel 5 reality hit Our Yorkshire Farm.

But many fans would be surprised to know that Amanda – who seems at home on 2,000-acre Ravenseat Farm in Upper Swaledale, which is home to 1,000 sheep, 40 cows, six dogs and four ponies – originally hails from Huddersfield.

The 46-year-old was inspired to leave the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire for greener pastures after falling in love with the great outdoors after reading James Herriot books.

Her fondness for literature also led to her embarking on the unconventional career of becoming a shepherdess after diving into a library book about a hill shepherd.

After admiring the stunning snaps inside the book she knew that she saw rolling hills and lush greenery in her future.

"It was the pictures, it was the landscape, it was the people — everything in that book just appealed to me," she previously shared.

"It wasn't glossing over the hard side, it was very real and very gritty and atmospheric but it was just the thought of working outdoors and actually doing something, having a physical job where you were out there feeling the elements — windburn, sunburn, rained on, all the rest of it — sounded like a good idea back then."

The two met due to a chance encounter after Amanda arrived at Clive’s Ravenseat Farm to pick up a ram and what started as just a routine job ended up with the pair starting a relationship with Amanda settling in at the stunning Yorkshire farm.

They share their home with their nine kids – Annas, Violet, Edith, Raven, Clemmy, Nancy, Reuben, Miles, and Sidney – who all muck in to help out in all aspects of farm life.
