Manchester United are set to miss out on Raphael Varane as the Real Madrid defender has reportedly decided he would like to return to France.

Varane, 28, is believed to be a key transfer target for the Red Devils as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to finally sign a long-term partner for Harry Maguire.

The Frenchman is considered one of the finest centre-backs in La Liga but has failed to sign an extension on his contract, which is due to expire next year.

Real Madrid are therefore looking to offload Varane for a substantial fee this summer, with United poised to swoop.

The 2018 World Cup winner, however, has decided he would like to return to his native country by joining Paris Saint-Germain, 10 years on from when he left Lens.

That's according to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial , which notes PSG harbour interest Varane and that the player is available for a fee of €60million (£51.5m).

But the bad news does not stop there for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, as Varane's decision may also mean they miss out on another of their priority centre-back targets.

In a bid to replace their long-serving stalwart, Los Blancos are understood to have identified United target Jules Kounde as their number-one option.

Sevilla are demanding a similar fee for Kounde as Real Madrid are asking for Varane, so it is possible there may be a transfer merry-go-round on the continent this season.

Kounde seemed open to a move away from the Andalusian club as he spoke late last month, saying: "Regarding my future, it is certain that I will perhaps be brought to change this summer, but nothing is acted yet, I did not decide anything.

"My objective is to evolve at a big club, to always try to progress and win trophies, too. I may have to move, but it is not on the agenda."

Varane, meanwhile, was solely focussed on adding a Euro 2020 winners' medal to his 2018 World Cup triumph as he addressed his next move.

"This is not the time to talk about my future, I am focused on the selection, on this Euro, it is normal and logical to ask the question and for my part it is normal and logical to focus on the upcoming deadlines," said Varane.

"We are all human beings. We can think about it. As for my personal case, I am focused on the objectives that we have in the France team, it is not a subject that I will discuss every day in my room at Clairefontaine.

"I am focused on my goal, and now is not the time to discuss it. If I have to talk about it, it will be directly with the people concerned."
