Cheryl stepped up to support ex Liam Payne and was the “voice of reason” as his relationship with Maya Henry began to falter.

The Strip That Down hitmaker began dating the model in 2019, and just over one year later, Liam popped the question, and the couple began making plans for their wedding bash.

However, the former One Direction singer confirmed earlier this month that he had split from Maya, in a candid confession, revealed that he wasn’t “very good at relationships” and was disappointed that he had been “hurting people”.

Cheryl and Liam began dating in 2016, and welcomed son Bear Grey Payne just one year later, but split in 2018, with the Fight For This Love hitmaker stepping out of the limelight to raise her son.

Over the past few months, the 37-year-old has been Liam’s shoulder to cry on, and after seeing her ex so tormented by his relationship with Maya, Cheryl was reportedly forced to step in.

“Things had been going wrong with Maya for a while, and the engagement had just made things worse,” an insider told Heat magazine.

“As soon as they started planning the wedding, it went sour, as Liam was feeling the pressure to change a lot of things in his life.

“It was Cheryl, who was telling him that if he wasn’t happy, then he needed to ‘grow a set’ and speak out. She saw it as her responsibility to be the voice of reason, as Liam’s choices have a direct impact on Bear,” the source added.

During his appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast in which he announced the break-up, Liam spoke about his disappointment at the relationship ending, and put the blame squarely on himself.

“I know what my pattern of things is with relationships, at this point. I’m just not very good at them, so I just need to work on myself before I put myself on to somebody else,” he confessed.

Liam, 27, previously spoke about his co-parenting relationship with Cheryl, and said that over the last 18 months, he’s become a lot closer to four-year-old Bear.

“(She) is literally the best person to co-parent with. No stress involved, and I’m closer to them than I’ve ever been before, which is really nice,” he beamed.

There have been rumours of strife in Liam and Maya’s relationship, and last year, it was reported that the American model had begun to feel isolated after relocating from Texas to Buckinghamshire so Liam could be near his son.

Maya, 21, was left alone as the singer spent time with his son, and Liam soon began confiding his problems to ex Cheryl.

"Instead of dealing with his issues, Liam would be around Cheryl a lot, off-loading all his problems on to her,” an insider told Heat.

“She just wants him to be the best dad he can be, and since the split, he’s been around more than ever.”
