England got their Euro 2020 campaign off to a perfect start with a 1-0 win over Croatia thanks to a second-half finish by Raheem Sterling.

Mike McGrath ran the rule over Gareth Southgate’s side.

England (4–2-3-1)

Jordan Pickford — 6/10
Mostly sound with the ball at his feet aside from one slice in the first half. He cleared well and moved the ball around the back four. Did not have saves to make.

Kyle Walker — 5/10
Really struggled to get into the game. Awful early crossfield pass, followed up by kicking the ball straight into touch without any pressure. Made up for it by starting move for goal.

John Stones — 7/10
Composed on the ball as England played out of defence and coped well with the threat of Rebic. After his mistake in his last international, he took less risks and looked secure.

Tyrone Mings — 7/10
One ball launched turned defence into attack and sent Raheem Sterling through. Big presence at the back and got his foot on plenty of balls into the box to clear.

Kieran Trippier — 6/10
Chosen to play on the opposite flank ahead of the two left-backs in the squad. It meant he would not cross with his left. Disappointed not to clear the wall with free-kick in a great position.

Declan Rice — 6/10
Good covering runs protecting his defence but was difficult to dominate in the midfield with numbers in central areas of the pitch. Got himself into the game by battling and always wanted the ball.

Kalvin Phillips — 8/10
Beautiful pass to send Sterling through for the opening goal. Started deep but was also seen further up the field as the game progressed. Neat individual play and tenacious in the tackle, he looked at home.

Raheem Sterling — 8/10
Cool finish for England’s first goal of the tournament but it was the attacking run that so important. Before that was at the heart of the good work England produced in the first half with his running onto long balls.

Mason Mount — 6/10
Split the Croatia defence with one pass to Sterling, similar to the one he produced in the Champions League final. Close with a free-kick and got on the ball after Sterling’s goal.

Phil Foden — 6/10
Hit the post with early chance after creating a yard of room for himself. Could have been mistaken for Paul Gascoigne with that chance and his threat. Right-sided attacking midfielder looks a good position for him.

Harry Kane — 5/10
Dropped too deep at times, with Phillips running ahead of him. He needed to be in the penalty area more to give his team-mates something to aim for. When he got on the ball nothing came off for him.
