The bodies of a woman and man were discovered on neighbouring streets just six hours apart, sparking police investigations into the deaths.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched a murder probe after the 58-year-old woman was found dead at a home in Longsight at about 2pm on Friday.

At about 8pm, officers were called to a neighbouring street after the body of a man in his 60s was discovered. His death was being treated as "unexplained".

Both scenes remained cordoned off on Saturday afternoon, though it was unclear if the deaths were linked, the Manchester Evening News reported.

A GMP spokesperson said: "We're keeping an open mind around any potential links at this time, as our investigation is in the extremely early stages, and we can't rule out any lines of inquiry."

Forensics officers were carrying out an investigation at the scene where the woman was found.

An end of terrace house appeared to be at the centre of enquiries.

Neighbour Stuart Dudley said the woman had lived there for about six or seven years.

He added: "I’ve spoken to her to say hello, but that’s it.

“It’s really sad. I’ve never seen so many police cars before.”

Another neighbour said: “This is a pretty quiet area. It’s scary that something like this is happening near my house.”

A police spokesperson sad: "A murder investigation has been launched, following the death of a woman in Longsight.

"Police were called to an address on Holker Close in Longsight just before 2pm on Friday 11 June to reports a body had been found.

"Emergency Services attended, and discovered the body of a 58 year old woman."

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wilkinson, from GMP's Major Incident Team, added: "First and foremost our thoughts remain with the woman's family, who are understandably devastated following the discovery yesterday.

"Detectives are carrying out a thorough investigation, and are following up a number of lines of inquiry to piece together exactly what has happened, and bring whoever is responsible to justice.

"Our investigation is in its early stages, inquiries are ongoing, and there will be an increase of officers in the area.

"Anyone concerned in the local area can stop and speak to our officers.

"We're also asking anyone with information to come forward – even the smallest bit may help with our investigation.

"Anyone who may have seen something, can contact police via LiveChat on our website or call 0161 856 6908 quoting incident number 1599 of 11/06/21. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A short distance away, police tape surrounded a flat following the discovery of the man's body.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Police were called to an address on Plymouth Grove at around 8pm on Friday 11 June, to reports of a body.

"Emergency services attended, and sadly discovered the body of a man in his 60s.

"His death is currently being treated as unexplained at this time, officers remain in the area, and inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances."

It is not yet known if the two deaths are linked.
