Kate Garraway has said that Piers Morgan would rally her during her husband's battle with Covid.

The 54-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter said that her former colleague would quote Winston Churchill in a bid to keep her belief high as hubby Derek spent months in hospital fighting the killer virus.

She said that Piers used tough love as a method to help her through the tough time, especially when Derek was in a coma for months.

Kate said that her long-time friend would say to her: “You have to fight this. Do not crumble.”

Speaking about the toughest year of her life, Kate said: “When Piers rang he did what the Piers I’ve known for 20 years always did, and went into Churchillian rallying mode.

“‘Right, Kate, get a grip. You’re a brilliant journalist. Do what you do best . . . get on this. Get to the bottom of the situation."

Writing in her new book, The Power of Hope, Kate continued: "He was like a rugby team captain, preparing me for the pitch, quoting every inspirational figure he could from Churchill to Nelson Mandela.”

Derek, 53, was put in a coma last March after contracting Covid, and Kate said that Piers really helped during that time, adding: "It worked, spurring me on.”

Derek was able to finally come home in April, much to the delight of Kate and their children Darcey, 15, and Bill, 11.

Kate has also had reason to be grateful for the work of the NHS, after her mum Marylyn, 78, was admitted to hospital.
