For Chelsea, it has been an incredible campaign full of ups and downs but concluding with their triumph in the Champions League against remarkable odds.

Thomas Tuchel arrived to take over from fan-favourite Frank Lampard and turned the ship around.

But even the German mastermind would largely put down his achievements at Stamford Bridge so far down to one man – N'Golo Kante.

The Blues star has always been denoted for his humble attitude, his great work ethic and his lovable smile but has never been the main man.

That has completely changed this year with Kante more in the limelight than he has ever been – even more so than his PFA Player of the Year award in 2017.

Thomas Tuchel's success has been helped by N'Golo Kante's efforts

It has led to calls from his fellow countrymen to win the Ballon d'Or after man-of-the-match performances against Manchester City, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on Chelsea's path to Champions League glory.

Ahead of the Euros this summer, the one trophy Kante has not got his hands on, France teammate and Manchester United star Paul Pogba said: “What I would like to say to the whole world is that the ‘NG’ we have seen in recent months has always been the same.

“We talk a lot about his performances but he has always been as good as ever.

“There was no Cristiano and Messi in the semi-final, so it's good to see the performances of the midfielders or even the defenders.

“I said a long time ago that it would be appropriate, if Chelsea won, for him to win the Ballon d'Or. It would be deserved too.”

And France legend Thierry Henry, who has shared dressing rooms with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Dennis Bergkamp and Lionel Messi, has been left gobsmacked by Kante's ability.

He told the FIVE YouTube channel: "Listen, you notice certain guys because they score and grab the headlines.

"But I rarely see a player who arrives before the ball. Like, he already knows the ball is going to land there. Sometimes he arrives before the ball and I’m like, 'how does he do that?!'

"He reads the game to be able to intercept the ball without fouling or tackling most of the time. He arrives at the same time as the ball, sometimes earlier.

"The amount of times he turns a counter-attack for his opponent to a counter-attack for his team… You are building and suddenly he gets the ball and you’re in trouble. So many times!

"So many times you see him getting the ball back and soon after it’s a goal for Chelsea. The capacity he has to read the game and see where the ball is going, sometimes he gets there before the ball!

"It’s not guessing. When they say a striker smells the goal, it’s the same with Kante. He knows exactly where the ball is going and he can read the pass and the pattern of play."

Kante is well-loved his teammates, which was clear to see as Chelsea celebrated in Porto as they lifted the Champions League trophy.

On that night, the world truly saw the impact that the Frenchman has on his team whereas before he has always been heralded as the unsung hero.

The praises are being truly sung out now with all to hear – and Kante looks set to go down as one of the best players of his generation.
