After a blistering week of soaring temperatures and sunny skies Brits are set to be rocked by thunderstorms and heavy showers today.

In a blip from the recent balmy weather forecasters predict that huge swathes of the country will be lashed with torrential downpours on Monday.

The south east of England, the Midlands and South Wales were all set to be battered by stormy weather overnight.

The Met Office warned that as Monday develops northern and eastern parts of England would bear the brunt of the worst of the weather.

In those areas forecasters have urged people to expect some heavy showers as well as a thundery weather throughout the day.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: "Those showers could be quite heavy and intense, and thundery in some areas.

"However other parts of the country will see a relatively nice day."

Ms Mitchell said it will be dry with sunny spells elsewhere in England, with temperatures expected to hover around the high teens and low 20s.

Dry and sunny conditions will return on Tuesday for most areas, although cloudy skies are forecast across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to peak at 25C around London.

The South East is forecast to remain dry on Wednesday with the mercury reaching highs of 25C again, while other areas could see some cloud and rain.

The weather will be far more unsettled than it was over the weekend

A similar picture is expected on Thursday, with cloud and rain forming in the west, ahead of a largely dry weekend.

It comes after the first few days of June saw top temperatures and sunnier skies than has been felt throughout washout May.

UK Weather Forecast Today:

Any early fog patches and low cloud burning off to leave warm sunny spells. Dry for most in the west and south but showers developing in eastern England and eastern Scotland, some heavy and thundery.

Tonight:

Showers in the east dying out to leave a dry and fine night for most. Becoming cloudier across northwestern parts by morning, with some patchy drizzle for northwest Scotland.

Tuesday:

Dry and largely sunny across England and Wales after a chilly start in the west. Cloudier elsewhere with some patchy rain or showers for northern Scotland. Warm in the sunshine.
