Harry reportedly told the Queen about baby Lilibet's deeply personal name choice – but Palace officials were kept in the dark about the birth announcement, it has been claimed.

It is understood Harry and Meghan spoke with members of the family, including the Queen, about the choice of name, which the Duke of Edinburgh used as a pet name for Her Majesty.

When writing to his mother-in-law, the Queen Mother, during their honeymoon, the Duke said: “Lilibet is the only ‘thing’ in the world which is absolutely real to me.”

Harry and Meghan are said to have told the Queen of their plans to name their baby girl after the Queen but officials at Buckingham Palace only found out about Lilibet's birth at 5pm on Sunday along with the rest of the world, reports The Sun.

The new arrival is a little sister for Archie, who was born in 2019, and a new cousin for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

A statement from the couple's press secretary said: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

But Harry retained his place in the line of succession so Lilibet will be eighth in line to the throne.

The first seven places remain unchanged – the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Harry, and Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Queen and the royal family said they were 'delighted' with the news.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

The happy news comes after Meghan suffered a devastating miscarriage last summer.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: "We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie."
