A mum who baked a cake for her friend's son says it left the two-year-old in tears after she failed to notice the glaring error she had made.

Iona Sugden had prepared the treat her friend Katherine to help celebrate her son Freddie's second birthday, shaping the sponge into a number two to mark the occasion.

Chuffed with the final result, the 30-year-old called her husband into the room to show off her efforts, only for him to point out a huge oversight.

Iona had forgotten to flip the cake back over when she tipped it out the tin and had mistakenly decorated the whole thing on the wrong side, meaning it didn't resemble a two at all.

The mum-of-one from Corsham in Wiltshire said: "Poor Freddie burst out crying when he saw the cake. I think it was all a bit too much for him.

"It was a marble cake with all different colours. I'd spent a good couple of hours on it and I was really chuffed with it so I called my husband to come look.

"He took one look and said you do realise what's wrong with it don't you. I was a bit miffed by his comment and said 'no?!'

"He just replied saying 'it's backwards' and I couldn't believe I hadn't realised.

"I had to walk out the room because I was so frustrated but eventually I did start to laugh. I just thought oh sod it, I couldn't be bothered by that point."

Iona, who works as a business analyst, celebrated Freddie's birthday along with her own daughter, two-year-old Nina, in Katherine and Freddie's garden last month, before the UK went back into a national lockdown.

After sharing picture of the blunder online, it turns out Iona wasn't the only one who suffered from temporary "number blindness".

She added: "I had to share a picture because it did make me laugh when I was looking back.

"But what I've found interesting is the comments on Facebook have been 50 per cent people who see it straight away and 50 per cent people unsure what's wrong or what they're supposed to be looking for.

"I'm obviously not the only one."
