More than 70 per cent of local areas saw a surge in coronavirus cases during the first few days of the national lockdown.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 225 saw a rise in case rates in the seven days to January 8, according to Public Health England data.

The national lockdown came into force in England on January 5.

The impact such restrictions might have on infection rates wouldn't be seen for around two weeks – the average incubation time of the coronavirus.

However, areas which saw their case rates rise significantly at the beginning of January are also likely to see their death and hospitalisation figures increase in the coming week.

The case rate in Knowsley in Merseyside increased by the most in the week leading up to January 8.

It rose from 598 cases per 100,000 people the week before to 1,461/100,000.

Halton in nearby Cheshire went from 695/100,000 to 1,302/100,000, Liverpool shot up from 493/100,000 to 1,085/100,000, while Sefton's rate more than doubled, rising from 529/100,000 to 1,113/100,000 in the Merseyside area.

The following list shows all the areas where case rates rose – from highest overall rate to lowest.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 8; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 8; rate of new cases in the seven days to January 1; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 1.
