Lewis Williams has been named locally as the man who died in a shooting in Doncaster

A man who was shot dead near a supermarket has been named and pictured.

The victim, named locally as Lewis Williams, was gunned down near the Farmfoods store in Mexborough in Doncaster yesterday.

Armed police were called after the shooting at roughly 5pm, with witnesses describing the situation as 'utter chaos'. 

Heartbroken friends have since paid tribute to Mr Williams on social media, describing him as a 'funny lad' with a 'cheeky personality'.

One said: "R.I.P Lewis Williams mate gone but never forgotten, had an heart of gold that lad would do anything for anyone. Pleasant mannered young man, really not looking forward to telling your little shadow Lillyrose that uncle chewis is not going to be around anymore.

"It's going to break that young girls heart. Thank you for everything you've done with my kids mate they will never forget you nor will I, take it easy up there matey until we meet again much love."

Katie Lindley wrote: "I’m still in absolute shock, I feel physically sick and heartbroken! Rest in peace Lewis Williams love you."

Paramedics rushed to the scene but according to people there the victim died at the scene, desperate attempts to revive him.

South Yorkshire Police has so far only confirmed that officers are investigating reports of a shooting

Locals said the victim was in his 20s but police have not yet confirmed any furthr details.

South Yorkshire Police said:” Police were called to Wath Road, Mexborough, at 4.46pm today (Monday) following reports of a shooting.

“Officers are currently at the scene as investigations continue.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information which may help the investigation, is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 495 of 11 January 2021.”
