A man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a horrific attack on a dad who died after being punched in the face in a car park.

Gary Swanick, 49, was allegedly punched once to his face and knocked to the ground following an argument between himself and a group of men in July 2017.

Mr Swanick suffered several bleeds on the brain and died from injuries connected to the attack in November 2019, Liverpool Echo reports.

Detectives investigating the attack have charged Paul Robinson, 51, with manslaughter.

Robinson is set to appear at Liverpool Crown Court later this month.

Mr Swanick had been drinking with Robinson and others on the afternoon of July 26, 2017, in the open air car park by Birkenhead shopping precinct in Wirral.

Mr Swanick was allegedly punched once to his face following an argument, and one witness told how the victim had stumbled backwards and fell, hitting his head on the ground "with a loud thud”.

The victim underwent several operations to relieve pressure on his brain at Walton Neurological Centre but he never fully recovered.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "Police have charged a 51-year-old man with manslaughter following an assault outside the B&M store on Claughton Road, Birkenhead, on July 26, 2017.

"Paul Robinson, of no fixed abode, was originally charged with Section 20 assault in connection with the incident.

"He was released on bail to appear in court later this month.

"The victim, 49-year-old Gary Swanick, sadly died in hospital on November 11, 2019 and police believe his death to be in connection with the assault in 2017."
