A pipe bomb was also found in the Republican National Committee headquarters.
More than 1,000 National Guard members were deployed as people descended on the Capitol. One woman was shot and died.
Melania's last online activity was on January 1, when she tweeted: "Wishing everyone a #HappyNewYear!

One person tweeted: "Anyway where’s Melania lol. She still missing?"
"Been missing for about a week now. Where did Melania go? Mar a Lago?" another said.
Someone else wrote on Twitter : "Not to keep rapidly tweeting but isn’t it funny how all this goes down and still Melania has disappeared."
The last time Melania was seen in public is when she journeyed back from Florida to the White House in a helicopter on New Year's Eve.
On the day of the violence in the Capitol, President Trump had attended a rally on the Ellipse near the White House in Washington.
After the rally, rioters clashed with police and the National Guard as they stormed the Capitol building.

Congress were completing the proceedings to officially name Joe Biden as the 46th President when rioters smashed their way in, causing members to evacuate.
Law enforcement officers destroyed two improvised explosive devices found at the complex earlier in the day, including one at the Republican National Committee headquarters, according to US media.
Trump was banned from Twitter and Facebook temporarily after being deemed to have incited violence with a series of posts, including one which contained the phrase "these are the things and events that happen".
The President later condemned the violence in an abrupt change of course, saying rioters had "defiled" the seat of American democracy and must be held accountable.
Trump then released a video to Twitter in which he also accepted the result of the election for the first time and pledged a "smooth transition" of power to Joe Biden.
