Stephanie Frappart also officiated the 2019 Women's World Cup final between the United States and Netherlands

France’s Stephanie Frappart will become the first female official to take charge of a men’s Champions League game when Juventus host Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday.

Frappart, who turns 37 next month, was the first female referee to officiate in a major Uefa competition match when Liverpool played Chelsea in the Super Cup in Istanbul last year.

She also officiated the 2019 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and Netherlands, awarding a penalty after a video review that was scored by Megan Rapinoe to give the US the lead in a 2-0 win.

Weeks before that tournament, she also became the first female referee to take charge of a French Ligue 1 match when Amiens played Strasbourg in April last year.

She oversaw her first Europa League game in October when Leicester City hosted Zorya Luhansk.

Before her 2019 Super Cup appearance, Frappart told Telegraph Sport that she was not “afraid” of the extra scrutiny that comes with being a female official in the men’s game.

“I think we’re the same,” Frappart said of male and female referees. “We have to prove technically and tactically [we’re ready]. I’m not afraid about that. Nothing changes about me.”

Roberto Rossetti, Uefa’s chief refereeing officer, made the decision to appoint the 36-year-old Frenchwoman for the Super Cup.

“She’s good. She’s really good,” Rossetti said. “She did a great season last season. She did a great World Cup technically she is good physically… she runs a lot. Mentally she is very strong…This is the main reason. I hope she will inspire thousands and thousands of young female referees around the world."

Switzerland’s Nicole Petignat was the first female referee to officiate in Uefa matches when she was put in charge of three Uefa Cup qualifying round games between 2004 and 2009.

Juventus, who have already qualified for the last 16, are second in Group G with nine points from four games, eight points clear of Dynamo Kyiv and three behind Barcelona, who face Ferencvaros on Wednesday.
