Jurgen Klopp will have been very disappointed by his side’s 2-0 loss to Atalanta on Wednesday evening at Anfield.

While the Reds’ hectic schedule and brutal injury list left the Liverpool manager with little choice but to rotate, the performance will have left him pondering if he needs better options in his squad.

Centre-back is widely believed to be the position which needs addressing most urgently, and fortunately for Klopp, there’s never a lack of stories linking players from across the globe with moves to the red half of Merseyside.

If he’s looking for inspiration then he doesn’t have to search too far. Here’s our round-up of the latest Liverpool transfer rumours which are doing the rounds.

Sales to fund purchases?

With the coronavirus crisis forcing clubs to play their matches behind closed doors, the football industry has seen a massive drop in revenue.

If Liverpool wish to buy new players in January, they may need to sell some players in order to generate a transfer kitty for Klopp.

And according to the Daily Express , Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are the men who could be sold so that the Reds can reinvest in their squad.

Origi didn’t take his chance to impress when he was handed a rare start against Atalanta, while Shaqiri has suffered with injuries throughout his time at Anfield and is absent at present.

With Diogo Jota the latest transfer hit at Liverpool, it’s hard to see Origi or Shaqiri being missed too badly if they did move on.

Argentine veteran on Klopp’s wish list

While Liverpool do require some cover at centre-back, they don’t necessarily need somebody for the long term as Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk will both be back in due course.

With that in mind, an out-of-contract veteran who has performed at the highest level could be just who they are looking for. Step forward, Ezequiel Garay.

The 34-year-old has represented Real Madrid, Benfica and Valencia among others, and according to Fabrizio Romano (as reported by Goal ) the Reds have been offered his services as they look to plug the holes in their defence.

Negotiations for Schuurs have begun

It won’t be news to you that Liverpool are interested in signing Perr Schuurs from Ajax, as that transfer has been mooted ever since the sides met in the Champions League back in October.

However, it appears to have moved closer to becoming a reality. Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness ) have claimed that the Reds have now opened negotiations regarding the deal and have set out their stall with an offer of around €30m.

With the teams due to clash at Anfield next week, Schuurs will presumably be in town and available for quiet chat with the Liverpool hierarchy too, should Ajax be happy with the proposed transfer fee. Watch this space.
