Toby Alderweireld fears he is facing a lengthy lay-off with a groin injury.

Tottenham defender Alderweireld limped out of his team’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday and is undergoing scans which will reveal the extent of the damage and his absence.

But it immediately hands Spurs an issue ahead of their Europa League tie with Ludogorets on Thursday as new signing Joe Rodon joined after the UEFA deadline.

Alderweireld, 31, could also be in serious danger of missing games in the busy festive period when the fixture list piles up and that leaves Jose Mourinho with a major problem.

The Spurs boss admitted his fears over the Belgian when asked if he could be facing a long-term injury after the win over City.

Mourinho told Sky Sports : "I would say so. I just feel sorry for Toby. He did a fantastic performance, he has an important injury. It's the injury of fatigue.

"It's the injury that happens. But it was an opportunity for Rodon to come into a game of this dimension and difficulty.

"So, let's go. Thursday we have another one."

The Portuguese manager added: "There is nobody to blame. He (Alderweireld) played in the Nations League matches that his team had to win to qualify for the final four.

"He is playing so well so we decided not to rest him of course. There is nobody to blame, just to recover as soon as possible."

In Alderweireld's absence, Ben Davies could play at centre half or be part of a back three, Davinson Sanchez could come back but it does mean that Eric Dier could have to play more games in a crowded schedule.

Alderweireld wrote on social media after the Manchester City win: “Fantastic team performance/clean sheet/win! Disappointed to pick up an injury, fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”
