Manchester City reportedly looked into signing Romelu Lukaku last summer as they searched for a replacement for Sergio Aguero.

Aguero, 32, looks set to end his City stay when his contract expires next summer after 10 years of service, over 250 goals scored and 10 major honours won.

The Argentine ace may decide to follow manager Pep Guardiola's lead by signing an extension, but there are serious concerns over his fitness issues.

Aguero has made just three appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once, and has been plagued by a variety of hamstring, knee and groin injuries in recent seasons.

Uncertainty over Aguero's future and concerns over injuries prompted City to consider signing a replacement last summer – and Lukaku was the target they identified.

That's according to the Daily Telegraph , which claims City were unwilling to pursue Lukaku after Inter Milan placed a £93.75million price tag on his head.

Inter signed the Belgian from United for £74million only 12 months earlier but believed his stock had risen substantially thanks to his 34-goal debut season at San Siro.

The 27-year-old struck nine goals in the Europa League last season as Inter reached the final of the competition, where they were overcome by Sevilla.

Lukaku has also hit the ground running this campaign with seven goals in seven games.

Meanwhile, City have struggled in front of goal in Aguero's absence and slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday evening.

Guardiola's side sit 11th in the Premier League having scored just 10 goals in their opening eight games.

With Gabriel Jesus their only available centre-forward, City are already looking at potential targets for next summer.

Etihad chiefs are believed to be keen on 21-year-old Darwin Nunez, who has scored five goals in 10 games for Benfica this season and is one of Uruguay's most exciting prospects.

City also remain linked with Lionel Messi and will pursue the six-time Ballon d'Or winner ahead of his contract's expiry next summer.
